Be water my friend

The time to face the music is closing in. Life as I know it will soon come to an end and a new period full of mystery and opportunities is coming. We have reached the point of no return. Anybody who denies that it not only brings moments of joy, but also moments of anxiety is either lying or unaware of what is coming. Here is where our list of goals is helping us staying on track. Stick to the plan! So as mentioned in the previous post “Let´s set our goals” I made my list and I know what I am willing to fight for. Fear may come upon me, but I will just use it to fuel my dream, I will turn it all around. Sounds like an overconfident sentence, wright? Well, it is not actually and there are many examples that prove my statement. Allow me to enlighten further, fear has been a major reason why I graduated my studies. The fear of failing a certain exam was the motivation that pushed me to go for that extra mile and study harder. Thank you fear, you are not so bad after all.

Did you make your list? What are you waiting for? You should! Not long ago I was talking to a friend who had to deal with several unexpected changes in his personal and professional life. Sounds familiar? Off course it does. Life is dynamic, nothing remains the same. It can be for a period of time and that period can be long or short, but change is an inevitable part of life. It has been so since the times of the dinosaurs, so do not be cocky and think that it will not occur in your life. Talking to this friend was a opportunity for me to offer some of my advice, which he really appreciated. He understood the power of reflecting on your life and where it may take you. Suddenly he appeared to be more calm about the whole situation and all this during one conversation. How could that be? Nothing had changed, we were just talking and his problems were still there. However, instead of loosing time on things that are not beyond your own control and directing the focus towards yourself is a theory that you can apply to any situation at any given time. Be as dynamic as life!

I thought I was a flexible person and had a dynamic lifestyle, but I was actually like a tree. Is a tree dynamic? They do change state according to the seasons of life. Following the seasons they have flowers and fruit in the summer and loose their leaves in the winter. They adapt to the weather in order to survive and they can be beautiful all year long. But they are not going anywhere, they have to fit in the plan of the weather or they die. I do not want to be a tree, I want to be like water. To not be dependent of the plan of someone else for me, I want to design my own plan. Water is dynamic, it can follow the stream or decide to go their own way. It is so soft when you touch it, but it has the power to break rocks and create beautiful caves, it can adapt to any form imaginable, it can create life.

The same conditions that apply to the tree apply to water as well, but when water does not stop moving it will not even freeze in temperatures below zero. It has been the driving force in the creation of our world as we know it, we could use more people who are like water. Time is not stopping for me neither, soon my steady income will stop but the same conditions will still apply to me. Everyday I will have to buy food, sleep under a roof, while having no steady income anymore to pay for it. You get it? I will have to be like water or I will die like a tree who does not have his own plan.

Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash, be water my friend.

Do not be fooled by the appearance of a majestic tree, do not be fooled by the appearance of anything. Be a student, be curious and try to understand how life works. You may be young and unexperienced, you may be at a certain age that you have experience. However, life is dynamic! Probably life is not moving at the same pace for the two given examples, but rest assured it is changing. Take time for yourself, invest in yourself and create your own plan.

Be water my friend.

  1. I loved this post because it reminds me of my favorite philosopher. He once wrote
‘We’re tired of trees. We should stop believing in trees, roots, and radicles. They’ve made us suffer too much.’
    Why?
Because trees normally grow in the same direction. Trees are the symbol of immobility. Trees prevent water from flowing. Trees have roots that keep them stuck to the same territory with no possibility to explore new ones.
I just found it great that you have arrived to the same conclusion.
